지하철로 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 서울을 가로지를 때, 날고 있는 듯한 기분이 든 적이 있을 것이다. 물론 한강을 건널 때다. 지하철이 공중으로 떠오르고, 강물이 아래에 펼쳐지면 1~2분 사이에 열차 안 분위기는 바뀐다. 강이 너무 넓어서 마치 시간이 멈춘 듯한 기분이 든다. 강을 건너는 건 한 순간처럼 느껴지지만, 실제로는 더 긴 시간이 걸린다.
많은 세계의 주요 도시들은 강에 의해 둘로 나뉜다. 세느 강에 의해 파리가, 템즈 강에 의해 런던이, 다뉴브 강에 의해 비엔나와 부다페스트가 그렇다. 그러나 대부분은 그렇게 두드러져 보이진 않는다. 파리 시내 세느 강의 너비는 135m~160m다. 런던 브릿지 쪽에서의 템즈강은 265m정도이며 부다페스트를 가로지르는 다뉴브의 강폭은 350m 다. 반면 한강의 너비는 잠실대교에서 870m이고, 몇몇 구간에서는 1km가 넘기도 한다.
틀림없이 강은 도시의 정체성과 분위기에 영향을 미친다. 흐르는 물은 강이 없는 도시들에선 찾아보기 힘든 생동과 역동감을 준다. 파리의 낭만은 대부분 세느 강에서 나온다. 그러나 강이 커지면 분위기는 변한다. 강은 아름다운 경치를 제공하는 동시에 강 자체의 규모와 힘으로 위협감을 주는 뭔가가 있다. 한참 더 큰 크기로 불어나 도시의 한쪽을 쓸어 갈 것 같이 보이던, 홍수 때의 한강을 절대 잊을 수 없다. 날씨가 고요하고 강물이 비교적 잔잔할 때조차도, 한강은 여전히 힘을 드러낸다. 나일강의 끝에 자리잡은 카이로의 모습처럼 도시가 강을 지배한다는 인상은 절대 갖지 못할 것이다. 대신에 한강은 도시의 존재를 용인한다.
가장 적절하고 특별하게 기억에 남는 한강의 이미지는 한 괴수영화가 제공했다. 만약 봉준호 감독의 ‘괴물(The Host)’이 파리를 배경으로 했다면, 약간 웃겼을 거다. 그러나 한강에서 기어 나오는 괴물은 강의 힘과 잠재적 위험을 함께 가지고 나오는 것처럼 보인다. 세느강이 길들여졌다면, 한강은 여전히 매우 야생적이다. 그래서 한강이 괴물을 만들어 낼 거라는 상상이 터무니없어 보이지는 않는다.
정치인들과 기업가들은 종종 한강의 제방을 쇼핑존과 레스토랑이 있는 관광지로 개발하자고 한다. 그러나 강 주변은 가능한 한 친환경적이고 야생적인 상태여야 할 것이다. 한강 둔치에 서 있으면, 서울의 다른 곳과는 매우 다른 느낌을 받게 된다. 서울시가 이 지역에 공원과 자전거 도로를 만드는 등 영리하게 머리를 굴려왔지만, 더욱 환경 친화적으로 만들 수 있는 곳이 많다. 이것이 서울에 독특함을 주는 ‘거인 한강’을 돋보이게 하는 방법인 한편, 경의를 표하는 길이 아닐까 생각해 본다.

Han River, Sleeping Giant
There’s a time when you’re crossing from North to South in the Seoul subway when it feels like you’re flying. I mean, of course, the crossing of the Han River. After the subway rises up in the air, water stretches out below you and for a minute or two, the mood in the subway car changes. The river is so wide that it feels as if time stops. What seems like it should take only a moment ? moving from one side of the river to the other ? actually takes much longer.
A number of major cities around the world are split in two by rivers: Paris by the Seine, London by the Thames, Vienna and Budapest by the Danube. But in most of them, the split is not as prominent. The width of the Seine ranges from 135m to 160m within the city limits of Paris. The Thames at the London Bridge is 265m wide, and when it runs through Budapest, the Danube is 350m across. The Han River, by contrast, is 870m at Jamsil Bridge, and over 1km wide in some parts of the city.
Rivers have a certain effect on the identity and feel of a city. The running water gives the city a sense of life and movement, that cities without rivers lack. Much of the romanticism of Paris is tied up in the Seine. But if a river reaches a certain size, the mood changes. At the same time as it provides a beautiful setting, there remains something intimidating about the sheer size and force of a river like that. I’ll never forget the look of the Han River in times of flooding, when it swells to a much larger size, and looks like it will carry a part of the city away. Even when the weather is calm and the waters comparatively still, the river still projects a sense of power. Like Cairo perched on the edge of the Nile, one never gets the impression that the city controls the river. Instead, the river tolerates the city’s presence.
It’s entirely appropriate that some of the most distinctive and memorable images of the Han River have been provided by a monster movie. Bong Joon-ho’s The Host might have seemed slightly ridiculous if it had been set in Paris. But the monster that crawls up out of the Han seems to carry with it some of the power and potential danger of the river. The Seine may be tame, but the Han River is still very wild, and so the notion that it might produce monsters doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
Politicians and businessmen talk often about developing the banks of the Han River into tourism zones with shopping and restaurants. But it seems more appropriate that the edges of such a river should remain as green and wild as possible. Standing next to the Han River, one gets a feeling very different from anywhere else in Seoul. The city has been smart to create parks and bike paths in this area, but there are many areas which could be made greener and wilder. This, it seems to me, would be the best way to highlight and pay tribute to this giant river which makes Seoul so unique.
